Open  Into  Life

I would like to introduce you to Emotional Freedom Techniques - EFT - as a way to reduce an immediate desire or unwanted craving for something, including food and cigarettes on a self help basis.

Where appropriate, with a practitioner, EFT can be used to help address and resolve the underlying emotional cause of an addiction.

EFT is being used by many people for many issues, for example fear of flying, anxiety, sport, performance and more.

It's easy to learn the basic tapping recipe and to apply it immediately you experience a craving - you may have seen it on TV!

If you'd like to discover how to Ease your cravings, Find and resolve the under lying cause and Take care of yourself (EFT) you are welcome to visit my web site at                                       www.openintolife.com

A SAMPLE OF EFT :-

Following the Daily Mail article on 17th February 2009, I’m writing to share with you an alternative approach that may be useful for people in a similar situation and how wellbeing practitioners can help. Also I will show you how you can use Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) which you may have seen in action on the TV.  By gently tapping on specific parts of our bodies, mainly the face and fingers, we are able to lower the intensity emotional and physical discomfort – this can help reduce pain, cravings, phobias and unwanted behaviours, indeed there are so many instances where we can use EFT that it is now gradually being used within mainstream health care.

Often people turn to complementary therapy as the last resort and it falls on the shoulders of the therapist to reassure them that there may be hope and things the client can do to bring about freedom.   Once the story has been unravelled and trust has been established treatment plans can be organised either in conjunction with or independent of the medical services.  Most practitioners will endeavour to work alongside the medics and none should advise stopping or adjusting prescribed medication without liaising with the issuing doctor.  Likewise when someone has become dependent upon over the counter medications it is important to check the compatibility of the therapy to the medication/s they are using.

Talking Therapies, such as EFT, help clients find new ways of dealing with the issues that caused the problem.   I usually introduce my clients to the simple technique that can be applied to physical and emotional problems as soon as possible by giving an introductory exercise.  As  EFT was developed by Gary Craig in the USA and he freely shares the basics on his web site here is the routine for you right now.  Once you have learnt the basics you can apply the routine for self-help and if you wish to take things further many EFT practitioners are happy to work with you in their practices or over the phone on an in-depth basis.

Before you begin you might like read through the full recipe and then have a go.

We will start with using EFT for something we all do – Breathing!   So, become aware of your normal breathing pattern, now take a slightly deeper breath and let it go, make a mental note of how deep that breath was.  Return to your normal breathing pattern!

We are now going to set the scene for our tapping – to do this we will write down a set up phrase on a piece of paper.   For this exercise please write:

Even although I am breathing....I love and accept myself

Now write down the key word BREATHING because we will use it in a moment.

The tapping routine will take about 2-5 minutes in total.

Imagine you are going to give a karate chop onto a piece of wood with the side of your left hand (its okay to use your right hand if you wish) – you would be touching the wood with the fleshy bit of your hand between the fourth finger and your wrist – half way along this is the part we will call the Karate point!

Using the tips of the first three fingers of your right hand start gently tapping on the Karate point of your left hand – tap, tap, tap...

Keep taping and at the same time say out loud our set up phase three times...

Even although I am breathing....I love and accept myself.

Now place  the finger tips of your right hand on the bridge of your nose and slide them to the beginning of one or other of your eyebrows and start gently tapping here for about 5-9 times saying the word BREATHING once.  (This point is called the Eyebrow point).
Now slide the finger tips of your right hand over the eyebrow to the bony bit at the corner of your eye (if you are wearing glasses it’s just about where the leg of your glasses goes to your ear) and start gently tapping here for about 5-9 times saying the word BREATHING once.  (This is the Corner of the Eye point).
Now slide the finger tips around your cheek bone under your eye and stop when they are about half way to your nose!  Again start gently tapping for about 5-9 times saying the word BREATHING once.  (This is the Under the Eye point).
Now slide the tips of your fingers to under you nose – there is a groove between your upper lip and the bottom of your nose – gently tap half way down this groove 5-9 times saying the word BREATHING once.  (This is Under the Nose point).
Now slide the tips of your fingers over the lips to half way down your chin and gently tap 5-9 times saying the word BREATHING once.  (This is the Chin point).
Now slide the tips of your fingers down your neck to the knobbly bit of your collar bone (either side is okay) and gently tap 5-9 times saying the word BREATHING once.  (This is the Collar bone point).
Now slid the tips of your fingers under the arm pit (either side) and move down about 8 cm (2-3 inches) and gently tap 5-9 times saying the word BREATHING once.  (This the Under Arm point).
Go back to the Eyebrow point and repeat this pattern a couple more times please and then rest.
Become aware of your natural breathing pattern and when you are ready take a deeper breath in and let it go.  How did it feel?  It may have been a little easier.

Now you know the basic EFT tapping routine which can be applied to just about anything.

We learnt in the article that Jo began using painkillers for severe period pains.  EFT has been successfully used for pain control on many occasions.  Here is an example for period pain.

Even although I have this period pain...I accept myself.

Followed with a couple of circuits of tapping using the word - PERIOD PAIN.  After which we would review the intensity of the pain, maybe before she began it was really bad at an intensity of 10/10 and after the first round of tapping it may have reduced to 8/10.

Because the pain was still there we would do another round using the set up phrase,

Even although I still have this period pain...I accept myself.

Followed by a couple of circuits of tapping using the words, REMAINING PAIN.  Again we would review the intensity of the pain and note the score, maybe it reduced to 3/10.  So another round of tapping is needed, this time we could use the set up phrase,

Even although the pain is 3/10...I accept myself.

Followed by a couple of circuits of tapping using the words Three out of Ten.  The objective is to continue tapping circuits until the pain has been reduced to Zero or as near to Zero as possible.

From the article we know that Jo became distressingly dependent upon her painkillers and eventually recognised the problem.  EFT may have helped here, firstly I would have asked her how badly she wanted each pain killer and to score the intensity (my guess is would have been 10+ out of 10).  Using this intensity we could create a suitable set up phrase, for example,

Even although I really want this pain killer... I accept myself.

Followed by a couple of circuits or more of taping using the words Painkiller – after which we would review the intensity score.   The important thing is to keep going until some reduction in the intensity is reached.   In the early stages EFT is no substitute for the medication, but it can be used to work on reducing the craving (this applies to all addictions, smoking to food and chocolate).

In the article Jo talks about difficulty in acknowledging her addiction and the emotions she and her husband felt as they tried to cope.  The above examples are just the doors that can open a palace of possibilities with EFT.  The techniques can be creatively used to overcome many of the emotional issues associated with addiction, for example the guilt of knowing the harm excessive substance use is causing your body and the affect your disease is having on your family and friends.

When people are experiencing these very real emotional challenges I would recommend that they seek support from professional therapists (in addition to medical support) who will be able to work more extensively at deeper levels.  From my point of view, when some one comes to my practice saying they have a named problem it is important to acknowledge the condition and more so welcome them as person on their journey of inner healing.  Sessions integrate the many other aspects of EFT (and additional therapeutic resources where appropriate).

If you are a career of someone with a dependency you can use EFT to stay calm and focussed through the frustration, distress and upset. Here are some set up phases for you –

Even although I feel powerless to help...I choose to remain calm and loving.  Key word for your circuit: Powerless.

Even although I feel angry that no-one is helping us...I choose to remain calm and loving.  Key word for your circuit: Angry

And so it goes on.

Maybe the foregoing has opened your mind to another way and if you are drawn to discover more you are welcome to make contact.

Tried it tonight and surprise, despite my being a bit septic, it did seem to help but the feeling wore off after an hour or so.
I will try it again tomorrow when I've more free time.
Anything's better than taking tablets !!
